A Tailhook failure was the cause of the accident.
No...it sure wasn't.
Bolter or wire break, didn't think they had enough airspeed, punched, and now the plane has almost 1000 lbs less weight in the nose so it's CG moves aft and you get the nose pitching up.....and off flies a perfectly good a/c. I've heard stories that they went and shot it down....but then I've also heard that it crashed on it's own.
I heard very similar story's... seems a little funny to see an aircraft with a now empty cockpit fly off seemingly perfectly OK... But I am with those that say definatly, better safe than sorry... Glad the aircrew got out OK!!!
I was on the Bow that Day as the Top Side PO for V2 Catapults onboard the USS Lexington(AVT-16) In the Gulf of Mexico
Funny Here but not then when it happened. The A-6 pulled stright up to approx 3500 ft then Hammerhead straight down heading in our direction. The ship did a hard turn to starboard to avoid it. It Crash about 100-200 yards away from Us. A Tailhook failure was the cause of the accident.
