This was a good friend of mine at the controls, he had a hydraulic failure which required him to use the alternate gear extension, left main didn't lock down and failed upon touchdown. He went off the side of the runway holding the ejection handles cause he wasn't sure if the A/C was gonna catch a a wing and flip. Mishap was not pilot error or a hard landing.

Upon watching it again, it would seem the pilot got an indication that the gear was down but not locked. Everything seems to point that they knew ahead of time something wasn't right. The other F-15 escorting it all the way down to the runway, the tailhook lowered, the crash trucks next to the runway, and the video camera recording it all. It wasn't simply a case of landing too hard.

In fact, it's an F-15E Strike Eagle. As for the landigng gear, it looks like the left shock absorbers gave out.

No such thing as a single seat Strike Eagle. ;)

They say 'America' like 10 times in that video, no need to know Japanese to understand that it wasn't the F-15J. Did he trap the hook? I have a better quality video, but I forgot where it is, and my memory is chronic-affected, so...

the tailhook was down during the landing too, which makes it even more reasonable that there had to be a prob. with the landing gear, the wingman didn't even try to land, he just escorted the damaged plane.

Well, the landing was a bit hard, but I don't think it wasn't the reason of the landing gear to collapse.
It seems that the pilot had problems before to lock the undercarriage.
