Kara Hultgreen may have been flying one of these jets. Her first F-14 cq was on 12-13 APRIL, 1994 and she did not qualify.

Foregot to say that pilots stay current in landing by doing it regularly as when they are deployed or in a pre deployment exercise like TSTA, COMPTUEX or JTFEX.

The first CQ for a pilot in training is daytime only in a T-45. Then a day/night cq in an FRS training squadron in the plane they have been chosen to fly. Currency in carrier landings is only good for a number of days. Once a pilot is out of currency he/she needs to qualify again. For fleet squadrons, CQs are typically done before on-board training excersises and before deployment. Chapter 6 of http://www.navyair.com/LSO_NATOPS_Manual.pdf goes into great detail about what is required to qualify once a pilot loses currency.
