Note the missing paint from the body and the leading edge from high speed flight. The airplane was so advanced for its time, it was also ahead of paint!
Yep, the mechanics always knew when they were coming back from a fast flight. The peeled-off paint was the giveaway. It was the same thing with the B-58 Hustler.
Did it? :-D :-P
A real pity this aircraft never went into production, it would've been one of the great classic aircraft of all time. Tu-160 got nothing on this.
Can't remember the Russians being ahead of USA technologies.... ;-)
rare stuff though the monster is not my favourite....
I can see that its had to have a very long landway.. maybe thats why they were landing it on sand or something:P must have cost a lot of paint to.. i dont think they could find a good use for the plane
It was the dry lake bed at Edwards AFB, were the Valkyrie (as well as just about every USAF aircraft) was put through flight testing. The lake bed is used because It can support 20,000 pounds per square foot, and measures something like 7 miles by 14 miles. A lot of room if something bad goes wrong!
