The pilot of military stunt plane narrowly avoided killing himself and others on Monday when he crash-landed in Santiago
after the craft’s engine cut out in midair.
Eduardo Varas de la Fuente, 29, managed to crash-land the plane in an empty fish market in Lo Espejo after swerving to
avoid a set of storehouses containing some 25 workers. Although he suffered from trauma, a broken arm and More.. head
injuries, Varas was reported to not be in a critical condition.
The plane was part of the Chilean Air Force’s (FACH) “Falcons” acrobatic group. Varas had been carrying out routine
acrobatics training from an air base in El Bosque, just south of Lo Espejo.
The FACH has launched an investigation into the possible causes of the plane’s engine failure.
Another Falcon acrobatic plane also crash-landed in Santiago last August, hitting three vehicles but not causing any
fatalities or injuries.
