That was the placarded limit. You had to throttle back not to exceed that limit. The theoretical top speed was M 2.6.

wow what a beutiful sound from that J79. The starfighter is an amazing aircraft. CT-133, the -104 actually had a top speed of only mach 2.2.

Thanks for the vids. I'll try and post mine of Mark Sherman's 104. The 104 is still my favourite jet of all time. What other jet has to throttle back to not exceed M2.5 and melt its airframe!
