On 26/10/59 a Short Sunderland flying boat of 6 Squadron, RNZAF made a low flypast during the opening of Wellington International Airport, New Zealand. It is an equal record holder for the lowest height. The hole was repaired by the crew before they landed.

Thank you. I was in it - copilot to my squadron boss, who was flying it.

You can rread about it here:

Meanwhile, in the nitpick department, it was 25 Oct 1959, not 26. And it was not No 6 Squadron, but the Maritime Operational Conversion Unit (MOCU).

The Sunderland was an impressive plane. During WWII they sunk 28 U-boats. In one Sunderland versus 8 x Ju-88 battle, only 2 x 88s and the Sunderland got back.
