T-38 Barrier Engagement
This video was taken a few years back. It shows just how quick things can go wrong on takeoff. Watch carefully and you can see the bird enter the screen from the left side. Also note how long it takes (thus how far they travel) from bird ingestion to actually starting the abort.

interesting video.
if the soundtrack actually IS for the video, as in the sound isnt dubbed over the visual, why didnt the pilot decide to abort?
he clearly knew something was wrong but he didn't -seem- to do anything until the instructor told him to.

Because in a best case scenario it takes at least 6 seconds total to make the decision and apply the abort procedures. 3 Seconds to realize and state you need an abort, then another 3 to actually start applying the procedures to abort. There have been a lot of studies on this, it's just a human factors kinda thing.
