Hung Nose Gear

I've seen worse things happen in the AF all because some maint guy didn't follow a checklist.

First of all, yes, that is a FLIR ball on the left side. As to why it happened it could be for any number of reasons, none of which pertain to 'bad maintenance'. Having made 5 'cruises' with H-53's as a part of our squadron, I can tell you that this sort of thing is rather routine for the H-53 maintenance Marines and the pilots. It's even hairier when the main gear is the one that is hung. Nonetheless, this takes quite a bit of skill and lots of nerves on everyone's part.

Great video! What boat are these Marines on? But seriously though gentlemen, particularly perabrown and those knocking 'bad maint.' and who have not had the privilege to work on helo's or aircraft in general, by stating that by having a hung gear, you insinuate that poor maintenance was involved. You couldn't be futher from the truth. Aviation, like life has its ups and downs and sometimes things just happen. Having experiance on maintaining CH-53s of all models, I can say that once in a while we had hung gear issues primarily due to the gear not going up into the well properly, no fault of anyone. These helos like all other aircraft get a once over at least once a day. When was the last time you gave you car a once over this often? I can also say as an airline mechanic, that this happens with airliners also, but not reported to the media all of the time. Again, great vid! Semper Fi

you can thank the pilots for doing a great job in keeping in a hover like that its not easy-and the ground grew for taking such a risk , it sould not have happen in the first place- poor maint

Great work! What an awsome vid. Why is it nuts? I call it outstanding team work, and professionalism. I imagine the AF QA would have had the ground crew grab all of thier t.o.'s and probably still write them all a QDR for it

Just amazing the profesionalism by both the pilots and the deck crew is just phenominal they all seem so cool I wish I could say I had the skill to hold the nose of a CH-53 in the air or the nerves to stand under a CH-53 while its sitting on its main gear,this should be made into one of those motivational posters!
