Yak-38 compilation

This is a collage of video clips of the Yak-38 Forger, the Soviet Union's first production, fixed-wing carrier aircraft.
The Forger was very difficult to maintain (especially while at sea), was extremely expensive, had a meager payload, was hazardous to fly, lacked a gun, and had unbelievably lousy performance. So, "what was the point", you may ask? You have to think in a 1960's Soviet military context to understand why.
The Russian Government considered missiles to be a panacea, which could solve all military problems (a mentality which the U.S. leaned toward). So, when there was concern that targets might not get close enough for Soviet warships to use thier missile batteries, the Russians thought, "Let's send the missile batteries to them!". And that is exactly what the Forger is; a flying missile launcher. It was intended fly, shoot missiles at the enemy, and take off from/land on a helicoper carrier. Nothing else was considered important --- including the ability to go toe-to-toe with western fighters, which would have found the Yak-38 to be easy prey.

Actually, the Yak-141 is cancelled, and it never entered service.

The Yak-141 may be sold for export, but possibly not in Russian service.

Yeah, the Yak-38's performance isn't as great as the Harrier, but it is still a really cool fighter. Like the Yak-38 Forger, the Yak-141 Freestyle is also a VTOL fighter, and it also had some problems, especially hot gas ingestion problems, so, unfortunately, the Yak-141 won't be entering service, because it was reported that the program has been shelved, but it is also a really cool fighter. So the Harrier is faster than the Forger. The Yak-141 looks like a Mig-31 combined with an F-35 JSF.

Yes, the concept is that of an "Aviation Cruiser"' as the Russian Navy calls it. Rather than building a "traditional" aircraft carrier, which would have been little more than a mobile airbase at sea, the Soviet Union decided to try something different. It was basically a huge Cruiser, boasting MASSIVE armament, with an (almost) full-sized flight deck on top. The resulting vessels were the five "Kiev" class Aviation Cruisers.
In fact, the Kuznetsov-class Fleet Carriers actually embody this philosophy. They are equipped with cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, sonar and anti-submarine weapons, at least two kinds of SAMs, and the most powerful battery of CIWS guns ever seen on any one ship. Stripping away it's fighters would only make it mad!

The only Russian carrier is Admiral Kuznetsov, carrying various versions of Su-27 family aircraft. Different Russian concept of naval aviation came from the fact, that they have not been able to build so expensive weapon as the aircraft carrier is. Their weak economy could not afford it, simply they had not enough money, either militarism had priority in Russian interior policy. But their people were very poor. That´s why they began think about some cheaper solution, so called "asymetric response". Obviously not so effective as the carrier. They came with the concept of cheaper helicopter cruisers with VTOL aircraft.
The defense against western carriers should be submarines with new-generation torpedoes, which they develop until now. The rumour is, that those torpedoes are hypersonic in the water, because of plasma cover, which significantly lowers hydro-resistance.
Weak economy aimed at production of weapons finally lead to bankrupt of bolshevik system, which do not feed their people but produce weapons and feed the dummy bolsheviks. It meant the loss in cold war.

Well, they did, for all the good it did them. Oh, and another little known fact about the Yak-38; it is the ONLY production aircraft that is VTOL-only --- it cannot take-off horizontally, as the attempt in this film demonstrated. Also, take-offs and landings were entirely computer-controlled, because ANY mistake at all during these would insta-crash a Forger.
