This aircraft was actually painted in "Ducati" red color in order to commemorate a speed race between a 9th FW F-104S-ASA-m and a Ducati motorbike in late 2003. The race was postponed one year later in sign of respect for the italian losses in Iraq.
The F-104 feature the "999" number painted in silver since Ducati latest motorbike is named 999.
The horse is the symbol of the 9th FW at Grazzanise where the speed race took place in late 2004, few days before the F-104 retirement from active service.
A couple of F-104 (one TF and a S-ASA-m) were delivered to the Italian Experimental unit for chasing duties during the Eurofighter Typhoon supersonic trials until they were finally retired on July 27, 2005. That day made history as the last sortie performed worldwide by an F-104.
A couple of former-Canadian CF-104 still fly with the "Starfighter Demo Team" based in Florida.
Finally, the picture was taken at Pratica di Mare 2004 airshow dedicated to the F-104 withdrawal
