I wonder which version of AIM-54 they are using. The old A model required the F-14 to circulate cooling oil through the missile, which was a unique arrangement, the C model was updated for new threats and environments but still required cooling from the plane. The last "Sealed" versions did not require cooling but aircraft flight speed was limited to prevent overheating in captive flight. I would guess at one of the earlier versions that would be better matched to the AWG-9 than the "Sealed" one that took advantage of the APG-71. Though I'm more intrigued by the MIM-23 HAWK setup they use.
