A-10 Damage

Cool piece. Is this real damage? Nice machine gun!

Damage like this happens to the A-10 all of the time! It is caused by the refueling boom. The receptacle is pretty tough...it has a skid plate that is easily changed and all of the mechanical workings of the inflight refueling area are pretty easy to get to. Just pounding out the dents is an option...we would just leave them most of the time if they weren't too bad. If you work that metal too much in that area you get whats called 'oil canning' where the metal gets all stretched out and ultimately weakened. I have done a couple of flush patches on these pigs when the boom REALLY misses and cracks the skin. It takes the better part of one shift to accomplish (primed) but is good practice.

Well it certainly looks like damage from the refueling boom. You cannot say the refueling receptacle is damaged, because you cannot see it in the photo. Yes, the boom could damage the aircraft this way. Its also possible that the aircraft was damaged by a bird strike and the airframe just wasn't pounded back out.

warthog .... so good. Legend said its Gun is producing reverse thrust equal to one of its engine full throttle. Thats a bloody nasty one .....
