History of Aviation through the Cradle of Aviation Museum
If you happen to be visiting Long Island, then it might be worth you stopping off for a visit to the Cradle of Aviation museum, no matter what your level of interest in aviation might be. While at one point aviation was seen as only a daredevil sport, today it is now a very viable form of transportation. This has been very much due to Long Island which has also been responsible for much of the country’s aerial arsenal during wartime. Given its location (eastern side of America and western side of the Atlantic ocean), Long Island has geographically always been a natural airfield too. So it has really been the ideal place for an aviation museum!
What makes the Cradle of Aviation a museum worth visiting
If you do have any interest in aviation and you enjoy museums, you should definitely make the Cradle of Aviation a stop. Long Island is known for its connection to aviation (given its geographical location as mentioned above) and the museum uses this fact to its advantage, making it a real hands-on aviation museum. Long Island natives are proud of this history especially since they have been the forerunners on making airplane transport for commercial use. The museum thus shows how dreams can come true, since it is testament to how much Long Island has achieved in the field of aviation.

This is the year for the Cradle of Aviation museum so if you are in Long Island go stop by. Since 1909 was when Glenn Curtiss flew the “Golden Flyer” over the Hempstead Plains on Long Island, 2009 is the 100 year anniversary of the event. So during this entire year the museum is celebrating! There will be many special celebrations specifically to commemorate this event. These include: an Aerospace Hall of Fame (inducting famous aviators who have done something spectacular in Long Island); an exhibition which will center around Curtiss’ flight and will feature historical artifacts as well as interactive elements; a party for the 100th birthday of the oldest plane in the museum’s collection (1909 Bleirot); special celebration marking the 40t anniversary of Apollo 11’s landing on the moon and more. There is no better time to visit this museum!
